The N600 was not the first Honda sold in America. Honda had been in America for well over a decade before they started selling cars here. Remember, Honda is a motorcycle company that started making cars. That’s why their bikes are so much better than their cars.

Remember, Honda is a piston ring company that started making motorcycles.

the histories of old Japanese companies can be fascinating. Toyota started making equipment for textiles, Nintendo made playing cards.

No they weren’t. Tokai Seiki was the company that made piston rings. After their factory was destroyed by an earthquake, Shichiro sold the surviving assets to Toyota and used the proceeds to found Honda. Honda’s first products were motorized bikes which he made in his garage. The Honda Research Institute was later liquidated and the Honda Motor Co. was formed which produced their first motorcycle.

Tokai Seiki made piston rings, and was a completely different company. Their factory was destroyed in an earthquake. Shichiro sold the remaining assets to Toyota and started the Honda Technical Research Institute which began making motorized bikes. They were later liquidated and the Honda Motor Co. was formed which started producing motorcycles.

They were making sportsbikes at the time, but Shichiro was smart enough to know he needed a foot in the American market before he could start selling them here. Honda won the Isle of Man TT manufacturers trophy in 1959 with bikes they had been racing in Japan the previous year. In 1961 Honda took 1-5th place in the 125cc and 250cc classes at the Isle of Man TT.
